How long do I let my deck dry after I power wash to stain?

Published: April 03, 2021

It is recommended you wait at least 24-48 hours after power washing your deck or dock to apply a stain. Make sure you allow enough time after your deck has been cleaned and washed.

Once the deck is thoroughly dry, sand down any rough and fuzzy spots with 80-grit sandpaper and sweep up residual dust. Also, try to avoid staining your deck right before it rains. Most stains require at least 2-3 hours for drying.

Optimal drying conditions, such as a sun-facing deck, will allow less time, and if your deck is shaded, then more time is required to dry your wood surface.

Do not skip this step even if your deck was recently installed without stain. It would be best if you cleaned your dock or deck before a new coat of stain and sealer. If you have a dock or deck that has been previously stained, you can apply a cleaning solution (or just water) and scrub the surface as you power wash to remove all layers of old stain or sealer.
